Oh Pinterest, what do I say about you?

First and foremost, I myself do no have a Pinterest. Everyone of my friends have one and honestly they are always on it. I personally do not have the time to be addicted to any more social media outlets, so I need to keep myself limited this semester, therefore I have been avoiding the site.

I think Pinterest is a great PR tool because friends can share what they like in a heart beat. If there is a good product out there that customers love, people will eventually see it pinned by someone and may become interested and wish to be more knowledgeable about the product.

Also, I do not think Pinterest is a fad. I feel like it is very similar to facebook, in that people say they are sick of it or do not wish to use it anymore, yet they never deactivate their accounts. I feel like Pinterest offers a different aspect of social media and can be extremely useful and people definitely take advantage of that.

Stupid Cupid

Usually, I am never excited about Valentine’s Day. I will usually send myself gifts, send some to my girlfriends and of course get something from my awesome Dad. However, this year, I actually had a Valentine, and someone that I like! So, yesterday was awesome. He surprised me and it wasn’t cheesy, and everything he did was just super cute!

In the past, when I have received something I didn’t like, I just acted like I did! I feel bad and mean if I don’t act like I like it. It’s the thought that counts right!?! I have never gotten a truly awful Valentine’s gift, but yesterday had to top my gifts as the best. A homemade cookie cake asking me to be his valentine, my favorite flowers, a teddy bear, my favorite candy AND a super sweet card. Plus he took me to dinner and a movie and it was just awesome, not cheesy and felt like a super nice date.

If I worked for a company that could benefit from Valentine’s Day, I would give incentives to buy from me. I would give coupons or discounts if a certain amount of money was spent, and offer my expertise on what women really want on Valentine’s Day!

Social Media

Social media has drastically changed the PR world! PR professionals used to have to send out personalized invitations to companies and people for events and plan months ahead for events. It used to take PR professionals hours if not days to have a response if something went wrong with a client.

These days with social media all of that has changed. Now, if something happens with a client, a PR Professional can post on the internet a remark within a few minutes. Also, invitations can be online, calendars can be checked with the click of a button and RSVP’s can be given incredibly faster than they used to be.

I think some of the changes are for the better, I like knowing whats going on in my friends lives, but sometimes it can be a little too intense. I think having too many social media outlets is not healthy. We as humans need contact and human interaction. We are receiving that more and more with Skype and other ways to physically see each other and interact, but we still need contact as in touch. I would rather have a conversation with someone in person than on the phone or via Facebook.

I do think there are a lot of positives to social media though! I think that people that do not have a background in PR but try to handle all of the social media for one office or corporation are probably in over their head. It is a lot to manage and a lot to learn and become equipped to. Plus, they are not trained on the proper way to handle situations that may arise and do not have experience in the field.

Book or Movie?

I have always been an avid reader. I love books! I read each Harry Potter book within twenty-four hours of having it in my hand. With that said, I would much rather read a book before a movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love movies! They are so entertaining to me (well most are) and I can find myself engulfed in a lot of films. But that is the same with books. I can’t count the number of times I would imagine myself alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione fighting dragons and You Know Who. You just don’t get that same imagination and feeling when watching a movie that you do with a book.

For some reason, movies never live up to my expectations that books do. And movies tend to leave out SO MUCH VALUABLE information unlike books! Like My Sisters Keeper, the book is one of my all time favorites, and I was so excited for the movie. An hour in, I was so excited, everything was going great, and then… Boom! THE WRONG CHARACTER DIES! What in the world!? I mean who does that! haha

If I had to pick my favorite book to movie adaptation, I guess I would pick the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was really similar to what I remembered and did a good job of not leaving out important stuff.

All in all, movies will never live up to my expectations of the books from which they are typically created.

Bucket List

I consider myself to be quite an adventurous person, but sometimes I can be reserved. Therefore, my bucket list may seem a bit random and not too crazy, but I like it the way it is.

First and foremost, I want to graduate from college. That is about to happen in May. Second, I would like to be successful in my future endeavors in continuing my education. Third, I would like to go skydiving, because I love to fly in airplanes, so why not fly out of them? Fourth, I want to visit a third world country, that is something I have always wanted to do, but the opportunity has never been presented to me. I want to visit a third world country because I feel that it would make more appreciative of what I do have. Fifth, I want to go rocky mountain climbing, maybe go ride on a bull. Sixth, I want to go back to Prague because it is my favorite place on Earth that I have seen thus far in life. Seventh, I want to rewrite the seventh season of Gilmore Girls and tape it and have it on DVD. Eighth, I want to meet Braddigan from the band Dispatch because I am pretty much obsessed with him. Ninth, I want to meet Bumblebee from Transformers because I know he truly exist, and I love him. Last, but not least, I want to have a wizard tournament between me, Harry, Ron and Hermoine.

SMNR- Say What!?!

First, let me begin by defining social media. According to Wikipedia “social media describes the online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.” A SMNR (social media news release) is a news release that is released through means of social media whether that be e-mail, blog, etc. The advantages of having a SMNR is that multimedia can be attached easily. Let’s say you are releasing a news release on a new product launch. You have the ability to add in key words that can be searched, photographs, videos, music, etc. You could add a link to a website and people can instantly click to buy all within a matter of seconds. Manny Ruiz, president of Hispanic PR Wire, says that “The press release of the last century is dead.” He adds, “In its place is a dynamic service that is more of an interactive marketing tool, more relevant and compelling for journalist; the difference is it’s not only for journalists.” The audience for SMNR’s is extremely vast compared to a normal new release. A disadvantage to SMNR is that they are usually substantially shorter compared to a normal news release, which can sometimes be a good thing. Yet, sometimes leaving the reader with more questions and having to dig for more information. A PR practitioner should consider using a SMNR when they have a young or wide audience to reach. Also, if it is a product that has a lot of information on the web, or a way to add in a lot of graphics, videos, etc, it will be more interesting to the reader. However, if they are trying to reach an older group of people, I would recommend a traditional news release.

Five tips for creating your SMNR:

Use correct grammar and make sure your news release flows
Add in links, videos, pictures, etc, as necessary and possible
Be creative, but not over the top
Make sure to check and see how your SMNR will look once you post it
PROOF READ, PROOF READ, PROOF READ- there is nothing worse than a SMNR that is unreadable or understandable

I wrote this SMNR to inform the public about a President’s Ball that Georgia Southern University’s Student Government Association will be hosting in the Fall of 2011. It has been an even that has been discussed for a few months and the organization thinks they will finally be able to host the event this coming fall. At the event, faculty and staff from the university will be invited, as well as students who pay a small fee for a ticket. All of the proceeds will go to the organizations philanthropy the United Way. The target audience for this SMNR was anyone at Georgia Southern University. The organization wants to reach as many students and faculty as possible in order to raise the most amount of money for their event.
